Serving Altadena
& Los Angeles County
Altadena is an unincorporated area and census-designated place in Los Angeles County, California, United States, approximately 14 miles (23 km) from the downtown Los Angeles Civic Center, and directly north of the city of Pasadena, California, and part of the Verdugos region of the County. The population was 42,846 at the 2020 census, up from 42,777 at the 2010 census. The community was developed as a suburb of Pasadena in 1887 and remained unincorporated for local government purposes. The name Altadena derives from Alta California, the name of the state when it was part of Mexico.
Historically, Altadena has resisted annexation by Pasadena, partly due to different demographic compositions. The area has a diverse population, reflected in its schools and cultural life. Christmas Tree Lane in Altadena is the oldest large-scale Christmas lighting spectacle in the United States and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory is partially located in Altadena and has historically drawn engineers and scientists to the area.
